Are you raising a reader? I absolutely love reading to my son John. He is always excited to sit in mommy’s lap for our daily ‘book club’… I also enjoyed reading to my son Christopher when he was an infant. I remember as a family tradition we went to Chapters every Sunday afternoon and we’d sit down in a corner for hours sipping on Starbucks hot chocolate and reading books. By the time we left each week he was addicted to a new series. I still remember some of his favourite series; The Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants, Dr. Seuss, and as he got older the Twilight series and Anime.
Most moms and dads don’t have a lot of time to educate their children and create the core skills that are needed in the real world. Even if you don’t have time, there are ways of getting around this.
With all the technology available to us today, children are perfectly capable of learning on their own. But I’m still an old school mommy. Nothing beats reading to your children. I can’t think of a better way to keep them openminded, educated and hungry for knowledge. Reading will help to prepare them for a brighter future. I actually started reading while I was pregnant. And even though he’s still a baby I go over the words with him and point to objects making sounds and pretty much being silly… and he loves it! You’d be surprised what they can learn!
Reading regardless of your child’s age should be fun for them so don’t let it seem like work. Toddlers and young kids will easily become hooked on the same book so don’t be surprised if you’ve memorized every word! Don’t be afraid to read them the newspaper if thats apart of your daily routine… Just skip the ‘news’! Happy Raising a Reader Day…:-)
